MathCounts Team Finishes 3rd In State Competition (Video)
Powhatan School’s 2012 MathCounts team placed 3rd in the State of Virginia MathCounts competition this year. It was the highest finish for a school from this region since the late 1980’s. We caught up with the Upper School students on the team to talk a little about MathCounts. We also talked to Coach Holloway and discussed the approach to the competition. View the video below:
“It is pretty amazing when you think about the competition”, says Upper School math teacher Mr. Holloway. “You have to love the fact that little Powhatan, with 86 students in grades 6-8, can compete with schools from much larger metropolitan areas across the state that have 1000 students in them. We are competing against Magnet Schools that draw more students out to try out for the team than are in our whole school. That’s fun.”
Established in 1948, Powhatan School is an independent K-8 Private School accredited by the Virginia Association of Independent Schools and is a member of both the National Association of Independent Schools and Independent Education. Powhatan School opened the 2012-13 school year with an enrollment of 234 students. Powhatan serves families in Clarke County, Frederick County, Western Loudoun County, Warren County, Winchester City and the panhandle of West Virginia.
