The start of a new trimester brings along multiple different Afterschool Programs. The following programs are offered starting April 1st:

Yoga

3:30PM – 4:30PM
Grades 1st – 8th   10 seats available
Yoga instructor Gina Byrd will continue to guide students in their study of yoga and its culture through a physical practice and breath work. Mindfulness and relaxation techniques as well as yoga themed games and activities will also be enjoyed. All levels of experience are welcome!

Chinese Language and Culture

3:30pm-4:30pm
Grades 1st – 8th    8 seats available
Afterschool Programs is pleased to welcome Ms. Weiling Zhao as our instructor for Chinese language and culture. Students will learn beginner’s Mandarin in a fun and enriching environment employing a cultural approach that includes hands-on activities, songs, and games. Weekly assignments will be provided to help reinforce knowledge/skills taught in the classroom.

Python Coding

3:30PM – 4:30PM
Grades 5th – 8th    10 seats available
Afterschool Programs welcomes Powhatan alumna and founder of Princess Code, Ms. Suditi Shyamsunder, to instruct this special offering of coding! Students will be introduced to the basics of python programming and will need to bring their own computer for downloading the software for additional practice. If a computer is needed, please ask for one when registering for the class.

Spout Runners

3:30PM – 4:30PM
Grades Pre-K and Kindergarten    8 seats available
Afterschool Programs is excited to offer this outdoor experience to our younger students. Ms. Jess Foltz and Ms. Alice Rodway will take students through the Crocker for outdoor adventure and education! Students will discuss outdoor safety while learning about the many wonders located on our gorgeous campus.

Chess

3:30PM – 4:30PM
Grades 1st – 8th   10 seats available
Led by chess instructor Joe Jablonski, students in the afterschool chess program learn the game of chess in a friendly, dynamic, hands-on environment while building skill, strategy, and improving play. All levels of skill and experience are welcome!

Voice

3:30PM – 4:30PM
Grades 3rd – 8th   6 seats available
Instructed by Laura Couch, M.M Candidate in Voice Performance at Shenandoah University, students will have fun creating music, individually and together, while they learn breath management, singing posture, and raised soft palate singing.

Guitar

3:30PM – 4:30PM
Grades 3rd – 8th Available to all levels   10 seats available
Instructor Denver Walker provides a fun exploration of music genres and styles that will establish a foundation for students as they discover their own enjoyment of music and guitar. During this 8-week session, students will continue to develop skills in ensemble playing, riffs, chords, and understanding guitar musical notation.

We Do Programming

3:30PM – 4:30PM
Grades 2nd and 3rd   8 seats available
Afterschool Programs welcomes Mr. David Fleming to instruct students in the of use of laptops, Legos, and the Lego We Do 2.0 software to create their own Lego robots! This class will teach students a combination of engineering and coding to create robots that move and much more. Our projects include Lego burglar alarm, multi-speed fan, satellite dish, space rover, and a rescue helicopter!

Pottery

3:30PM – 5:00PM
Grades 5th – 8th    8 seats available
Afterschool Programs welcomes Mr. Dale Root as the pottery instructor for the spring session. Mr. Root is the artist who designed and crafted the totem pole in front of our library! Students will develop and practice throwing skills and techniques while creating their own pieces of pottery.

Painting Around Powhatan

3:30 – 5:00PM
Grades 4th – 8th   10 seats available
Afterschool Programs is pleased to offer this painting class as part of our spring session schedule. We welcome Ms. Barbara Sharp, a local artist whom you may have seen at the Upperville Horse Show, as the instructor. Students will explore the Powhatan campus to learn technique and skill involved with creating landscapes.

Crafting in the Makerspace

3:30pm-5:00pm
Grades 4 th – 8 th 8 seats available
Melody Schwartzman will guide students through completing springtime craft projects that encourage imagination and build skills.
