Seventh graders are studying alternative energy sources as a part of Earth Week!

They continued their study of alternative energy today with a hands-on activity to see firsthand how geothermal energy works. We caught up with a Q & A with students after the activity to learn more:

The activity simulated geothermal dynamics by running cold water through a warm water ‘ground’ and vice-versa. The students were split into two separate groups tasked with observing and recording the temperature of the water. At the end of the activity Mrs. Hobbs explained how the classroom they were sitting in, the McIntosh Center for the Arts & Sciences, is heated and cooled by geothermal energy, pulling water from multiple wells off of Spout Run, the stream that runs through campus.
