Third graders have been studying nutrition in science. Yesterday they headed over to the Lower School Science Lab to solve an interesting question.

Students explored the idea of running a marathon and two questions that followed. Would it be better to eat marshmallows or cashews before we ran? Which food would give student’s more energy?

By burning both the cashews and marshmallows, students were able to measure the heat energy provided by each piece. They did this by measuring the water temperature in each can after the burn.

Many students predicted that the marshmallows would provide more energy because they have sugar. They were surprised to find the opposite was true!
