Second graders are currently in the Lower School Science Lab studying volcanoes. Working together in small groups, students created their own volcanic eruptions combining baking soda and vinegar in the test pan. Using homemade play-doh, students would then trace the furthest points of the ‘eruption’ and lay out a flat layer of fresh ‘lava’. They repeat the process over and over using different colors of ‘lava’ to record each layer. Once dried, students then took a core sample to examine the layer effect. “Children learn best in a fun and engaging environment,” says Mrs. Foltz, the School Librarian and assistant for PK-2 Science. “We are firm believers in the notion that learning should be fun!”
