Bio

Darren Holgate joined Powhatan in 2019 and can’t get over how wonderful a place it is to be. Originally from the North of England, Darren emigrated to America in 2005. He’d been visiting the US since 1997 to participate, and eventually lead, an outdoor department at Camp Airy in the Catoctin Mountains using skills from years of being in scouting. The camp experience lived up to the promises made from the movies he saw as a child.

After completing his Bachelor’s Degree in Education in 2000, he taught all subjects to elementary grades in England and in a special educational needs school in New Zealand. Some special memories of this time include the Haka (prior to NZ), biscuits, SMARTboards, and working with nonverbal students. Upon arriving in Baltimore, he taught fourth grade at St. Paul’s and also completed his Master’s in Education at Johns Hopkins University.

In 2013, his family moved down to Virginia so he could take on the role of Lower School Director at Loudoun Country Day School. During this time he started many new initiatives at the school, gained his United States citizenship, and forged many friendships at his new home.

Leading the Upper School at Powhatan is such an honor and something he is already enjoying immensely.

Hobbies

His wife and daughters give him the greatest joy in life, but you can often find him tinkering with technology, reading a book, or embarking on a home improvement adventure.
