July 1, 2020 was my first day at Powhatan after being away for 28 years! It is a privilege to serve again at a school I have respected greatly since first coming here in 1985. Here are just a few of the reasons I admire so deeply our school.
1. Powhatan’s faculty and staff always put the welfare and growth of our students first. They work constantly to nurture the development of the whole child– mind, body, heart, and character.
2. Our paramount principles of excellence, civility, integrity, respect, and service inform every aspect of school life. These touchstones for our school are more important than ever to the healthy development of our students and to the vitality of the Powhatan community and larger community.
3. For almost 75 years, we have been focused ever so sharply on nourishing within our students their love for learning, their love and respect for language, their love for problem solving. And with our students’ having so many opportunities here to understand, engage, and appreciate different disciplines and ways of learning– the humanities, mathematics, science, world languages, the arts, nature, hands-on endeavors, technology– they come to see the connectedness in the world around them. That ability to see how our learnings relate to one another is critical to life long growth, to personal and professional fulfillment, and to thoughtful and responsible citizenship.
I am excited about this interim assignment and am grateful for the opportunity to rejoin a community with such talented, dedicated, and principled people, such timeless and important values as well as a rich history, and a promising future.
