Welcome from the Director of Admissions

Powhatan moves to rolling admissions after the January 31st priority deadline. Applications received after the priority deadline are processed in the order that they are received. Assessments and individual visits are scheduled on an ongoing basis. A number of grades are currently full and have waitlists, please contact the Admissions Office at 540.837.1009 to inquire about availability and to schedule a campus tour.

Powhatan School was established in 1948 by a dedicated group of parents of elementary-aged children who were committed to providing an enriching and rigorous atmosphere for learning. At that time, the school was located just down the road in a small, red schoolhouse in Millwood, Va. Seventy years later Powhatan is a vibrant and bustling hub for students and faculty alike. And while may things are different from our beginnings, the core values of our mission remains the same through our pillars of: excellence, civility, integrity, respect and service.

Here at Powhatan we believe education should inspire passion, curiosity, and creativity.

I hope you will take some time to discover the many wonderful opportunities that exist here at Powhatan. We have a unique learning community that builds confidence, challenges young minds, and instills a love of lifelong learning. I encourage you to spend some time here on our website to learn more about the school’s mission, pedagogical approach, traditions and school culture.

This Admissions section serves as your resource for learning more about the inquiry and application process, and is designed to help guide you in your decision-making regarding Powhatan School and independent schools in general. Of course the best way for you to get a sense of the educational opportunities that we provide for families across the region is to visit with us. I can think of no better way for you to get to know us than by spending a morning to explore our dynamic campus.

But don’t take my word for it, stop by and walk the grounds with us.

Sincerely,
Michael A. Hatfield
Director of Admissions

PS: We believe learning should be active, authentic, immersive, and purposeful. We do this through interdisciplinary thinking, technical acuity, collaboration, and inquiry-based learning.
