Afterschool at Powhatan School is comprised of two components.

  1. Licensed after school child care is available at a daily drop-in rate for all students enrolled pre-k to eighth grade. It is available Monday through Friday from 3:25–5:30 PM. Students attending child care will have the opportunity to participate in group activities, work on homework assignments, and play outdoors when weather permits.
  2. Afterschool Program classes are offered during the first and third trimesters of the school year, for a duration of 8 to 9 weeks, Monday through Thursday from 3:30–4:30 PM or 3:30–5:00 PM depending on the class. Class selections change from fall to spring trimesters with new classes being offered.

Chess

There are 7 classes in the session. 
Instructor: Dick Bell
Mr. Bell returns to Powhatan to teach After School Chess. Chess is not just a game, it helps to build problem-solving, forecasting, and strategic thinking skills. By playing chess you are covering every single standard of mathematical practice. After School Chess is for students in 2nd grade and up.

Frozen Adventures

Guitar Ensemble

Wednesdays, 3:30 P.M. – 5:00 P.M. ($175.00)
There are 7 classes in the session. 
Instructor: Denver Walker
This class is for students in 4th grade and up who have experience playing the guitar.
The guitar ensemble is a performance driven guitar class focusing on classical methods and developing ensemble skills. This is a 90-minute class providing students opportunities to engage in music theory, reading music, and guided practice. Information on performances will follow.

There are 7 classes in the session. Maximum 10 students. Guitars available for classroom use.
Instructor: Denver Walker
This is a survey class for students in 3rd grade and up who are interested in learning guitar or want to hone and review their guitar skills. In a fun and relaxed environment, students will explore music genres and styles to learn theoretical concepts, basic chords, guitar tablature, and standard notated music.

Love books? Write one! November is National Novel Writing Month. Join kids and teens all around the world in tackling the fun, frightening, and totally unforgettable challenge of bashing out an entire book in one month. You’ll laugh. You’ll cry. You’ll write like crazy for 30 adventurous days. And on December 19, you’ll have a great new book to read. Your own! Join us on Thursdays where we will support each other through this noveling journey that will take us from prewriting through publishing!

Pickleball

Instructor: Kenny Bitner
Coach Bitner will introduce students in 3rd grade and up to the lifelong game of pickleball. A popular game that combines many elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong. Coach Bitner will teach the rules, practice skills and plenty of singles and doubles play.

Yoga

There are 6 classes in the session. Maximum 10 students. Yoga Mats available for class use.
Instructor: Gina Byrd
This class is for students in 1st grade and up. All levels of experience are welcome! Students will learn about yoga and its culture through a physical practice and breath work. Mindfulness and relaxation techniques will be discussed. Students will also engage in yoga themed games and activities.
