Powhatan School loves our volunteers! There are numerous ways to become involved. Below are examples of activities on campus throughout the school year where we welcome parents, alumni, and friends of the school to volunteer. Please contact the Development Office or the Powhatan Parents Association (PPA) to learn more about volunteering on campus!
Annual Open House and Family Picnic
This is our annual event where we welcome new and returning Powhatan School families back to campus. This great back-to-school event is filled with good food, activities, and school spirit. Volunteers can assist in a variety of ways. Please contact the Development Office to learn more about volunteering for this event.
Hour of Code
Since 2017, Powhatan School has hosted Hour of Code events to get students interested in Computer Science. One week each December, students code in the library with Mrs. Miller, the innovation and technology teacher, and a host of parent volunteers! The Hour of Code is a one-hour grade appropriate video introduction to computer science, using fun tutorials to show that anybody (including volunteers!) can learn the basics. https://hourofcode.com/us
Carol Sing
A beloved tradition, Carol Sing brings the Powhatan community together to kick off the holiday season and enjoy music performed by the students. An annual crowd-pleaser, volunteers set up a table where they welcome guests and provide them with refreshments and cookies as they wait for the event to begin. Please contact the PPA directly to volunteer for this event.
Book Fair
Each Spring, Powhatan School hosts a Book Fair in support of the Lindsey Library. Volunteers are needed for set-up and tear-down, managing funds, and helping students with orders. It takes many dedicated volunteers to make an event like this go so well. Please contact the PPA directly to support this wonderful event.
Grandparents and Special Friends Day
Grandparents and Special Friends of our students are invited to visit the School to experience the teaching and learning that occurs each day. There are many opportunities for parents to be involved during the visiting hours to check in and greet guests as well as provide and hand out refreshments. Come spend a few hours with us and share the joy of the students with their special people. The time frame for volunteering is the second Friday of May.
POSTS & RAILS Field Day
An Annual Spring Tradition, all grades participate in a fun day full of activities. In grades PK-3, parents are invited to join their children in a series of challenges and activities. Grades 4-8 split into their POSTS and RAILS teams and participate in an olympic track and field style competition, gaining points in each athletic event. The day culminates with the 800 relays, a crowd favorite. Volunteers are needed for set-up and tear-down, organizing games, among other activities.
Field Trips
Field trips are an integral part of our curriculum at Powhatan Schools. All of our field trips have curricular significance, and there is an instructional focus for the students. Parents are often asked to accompany the students as chaperones or as visitors on these trips. All parents interested in accompanying students on an overnight field trip will need to submit a background check with the school. This process can take a few weeks so please reach out to the business office at the beginning of the school year to ensure you are approved and able to attend.
