The school search process starts well before applying to any independent school. As you begin the search to find the best school for your children, you will find various schools designed to meet different needs.
After visiting, researching and understanding the academic options at multiple schools, you will want to begin the admission process for your children. As the majority of our families do not have an independent school background, we’ve put together this quick timeline below to assist you with understanding the process.

Powhatan moves to rolling admissions after the January 31st priority deadline. Applications received after the priority deadline are processed in the order that they are received. Assessments and individual visit days are scheduled on an ongoing basis. We are experiencing waitlist situations in various grades. VISIT: We encourage you to visit campus. There is no better way for you to get a sense of what Powhatan offers than to walk the campus grounds, meet our students and engage with our faculty. APPLICATION: After you have toured the campus, your next step is to complete and submit the application for admission. It takes about 15 minutes to fill out and is the start to the official admissions process. Once we have received the application for admission, our team will assist you with the rest of the process. ASSESSMENT: Our admissions team will work with you to schedule your child’s on-campus assessment. Kindergarten Assessment Days are scheduled individually for morning half-day programs. Assessments for students starting in first grade are scheduled individually. These are full-day visits in the classroom with peers in the corresponding grade. All assessment is grade level specific, and the admissions team will provide you with specific details about what is covered at the different grade levels.
DOCUMENTATION: In order to complete your child’s admissions file, additional information may be required. Official transcripts, letters of recommendation, faculty interviews and other supporting information differs by grade level. Our admissions team will assist you with what is required for your child’s file any questions you might have about the process. We provide third-party forms for you to use to request information from your child’s current school.
FINANCIAL AID: Powhatan School is committed to opening the experiences of an exceptional education to as many qualified students as possible. Powhatan currently administers a generous tuition assistance program that funds roughly 20 percent of the student body, based upon demonstrated financial eligibility. ADMISSIONS DECISIONS: The first round of admission decisions are mailed no later than March 4, 2019. Moving forward after this date with rolling admissions we work on a defined timeline for each individual applicant. The process can take as little as two weeks to complete. We still mail a traditional acceptance letter via USPS, but simultaneously use an e-notification and enrollment system to make it easy and convenient for you.
