American poet, Charles R. Smith, Jr. visited the Powhatan campus Wednesday, January 23rd to speak with Powhatan students in grades 4-8. Mr. Smith is an illustrator/writer who has been awarded the Coretta Scott King Award for illustrations in his book My People and his book If was selected as an honor book for the same award. Mr. Smith is known for his poetry, but also for books on African-American sports figures such as his book Stars in the Shadows, about the 1934 all star game in the Negro League of that era. Mr. Smith’s visits to elementary schools throughout the area were arranged through the Education Department at Shenandoah University.
