Kindergarten sets the tone for a lifetime of learning!

The kindergarten program at Powhatan School offers a child-centered, literature-based approach to learning. The focus on thematic units throughout the year encourages children to learn at their developmentally appropriate pace. Full-time instructional assistants aid teachers in individualizing instruction to different learning styles and needs. Powhatan’s goal is to develop a well-rounded kindergarten student with a love of learning.

Recent studies out of Harvard University and Columbia University show that students who remain in a K-8 environment produce higher test scores and have more opportunities for leadership and growth. The Harvard University study focused on high school performance in relation to preparation within different middle school models. The Columbia University study, cited in this Wall Street Journal article, strongly endorses the K-8 model. The foundation for success is laid in kindergarten.
