Powhatan School Welcomes Jay Briar As Next Head of School

We are thrilled to announce that the Board of Trustees has selected Jay Briar as Powhatan’s next Head of School, effective July 1, 2021!

Jay is currently Head of Middle School at Sheridan School, a K – 8 school in Washington, D.C. Over his fifteen years at Sheridan, Jay demonstrated outstanding leadership and professional growth from his beginning as a math and history teacher, followed by his position as Director of Academic Life and finally Head of the Middle School. Prior to joining Sheridan, Jay served as Dean of Students and a history and math faculty member at Norwood School in Bethesda, Maryland.

At Sheridan, Jay is a dynamic administrator whose keen intelligence, systemic thinking, exceptional communication skills, trustworthiness and approachability have endeared him to the community. He is described as someone who “truly gets kids” and has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the whole child and their intellectual, social and emotional growth, a perfect fit for Powhatan.

Jay graduated from Vassar College with an AB in History and completed his MA in Educational Leadership from George Washington University in 2005. For secondary school he attended Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Alexandria and continues to be active in their alumni association. Jay and his husband, Alvin, have two young children, ages 6 and 2.
