We aim to resume in-person, on-campus instruction five days a week, in accordance to the COVID-19 health and safety guidelines provided by the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Here at Powhatan School we believe education should inspire passion, curiosity, and creativity.
We believe learning should be active, authentic, immersive, and purposeful. We do this through interdisciplinary thinking, technical acuity, collaboration, and inquiry-based learning.
Powhatan has long been known for an exceptional educational experience. We have an accelerated curriculum that provides a rigorous and challenging approach to the traditional subjects in English, math, social studies, and science. Our method of educating the whole child includes character development, social and emotional growth, and inclusion of plenty of extras. Art, music, drama, outdoor education, world language, and other ‘specials’ here at Powhatan continue to engage children while providing a well-rounded education. We do all of this in a nurturing, yet challenging, small PK-8 school environment.
5 Days a Week:
We believe that young children learn best in-person with experienced, dedicated faculty. As a small independent school, we are uniquely positioned to adjust and accommodate for Social Distancing guidelines and move forward with an on-campus experience. Our class sizes tend to average 13 students per classroom. Small classes, the use of outdoor spaces and creative scheduling allows us to adapt to the COVID-19 guidelines. We aim to resume in-person, on-campus instruction five days a week this fall.
If, in the case that we need to pivot once again to Distance Learning, we are uniquely prepared to do so. With three months of success in our deployment of online education this past Spring and a significant amount of student, parent, and faculty feedback, we continue to plan and improve our Distance Learning program, if necessary, in the coming school year. Our goal for distance learning is to keep our curriculum moving forward by introducing new concepts, providing activities and resources, and keeping students connected to their teachers and the program. Students will be expected to be accountable each day for doing activities and assignments that their teachers provide.
