Powhatan has a tremendous history of excellence with the MATHCOUNTS competition. Powhatan has won 8 out of the last 10 regional team competitions and competed at the state level. The best finish was In 2013, with the Powhatan School team finishing third overall at the state competition in Richmond, Va. “That strong history has never been as evident as the assistance I received this year,” said Mr. Funk, the MATHCOUNTS coach. “I would like to thank Nikil Shyamsunder ’19, a graduate of Powhatan School and currently a student at JHHS, for his help this year on the coaching staff. Nikil has been a great addition co-coaching with me this year. He’s been a terrific inspiration to our younger MATHCOUNTS team members!”

MATHCOUNTS is a national mathematics competition for middle school students. According to their website; it “builds problem solving skills and fosters achievement through four levels of fun, in-person bee style contests.”
