Earlier this month, the fifth grade students  collected canned goods. Students stock piled the canned goods in their classroom in preparation for their annual field trip to stock the shelves of the Christ Church Cares Food Pantry.

Earlier today, fifth graders took the entire morning to deliver the donations to Christ Church Cares Food Pantry just down the road in Millwood, Va. During the trip students learned about the meaningful ways the pantry serves people in our local area and the importance of helping others. After the field trip, students journaled about their experience. This hands-on experience has always been a notable memory for each fifth grader and is another meaningful way we live our school motto; We learn not for school, but for life.

Service Projects Across The School

Service is one of the five pillars of the Powhatan mission. Each grade at Powhatan selects a local charitable organization to assist, and many of the classes focus their service efforts during the Holiday Season.

School Service
Over the years Powhatan students have provided more than a thousand hats and mittens for local families during the holiday season. Coordinated by members of the Lower School Student Council, students collected donations of hats, mittens, and gloves. Mittens and hats were then hung throughout the library. The clothing will then be donated to the Evans Home, Winchester Day Nursery and FISH of Clarke County, supplying cold weather accessories for many area children.

Service in the Community
The Holiday Basket program assists local families over the break. Students from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade are helping to supply area children with holiday presents. Students and teachers wrapped presents this week to deliver to local families.
