Message from Head of School
Search Committee

The Board of Trustees of Powhatan School is pleased to announce the selection of Carson Roy as our next Head of School, effective July 1, 2024. Mr. Roy comes to Boyce from McLean, VA, where he serves as Director of Enrollment Management at The Potomac School.

This selection results from an extensive, five‐month national search conducted by a seven‐member Head of School Search Committee and supported by ST Search. The committee selected three outstanding finalists to invite to the Powhatan community for interview sessions with focus groups of trustees, parents, faculty, staff, and students. After diligently analyzing the data, listening to stakeholder voices, considering alignment with the strategic plan and needs of the school, and applying evidence from their own interaction with the finalists, the Search Committee came to complete consensus on the selection of Mr. Roy. The committee recommended the selection to the Board of Trustees, who, in turn, unanimously voted for his appointment.

Throughout the extensive vetting process, Mr. Roy proved to be an exceptionally strong candidate for the position of Head of School. With a proven track record of transformative leadership and a deep commitment to educational excellence in independent schools, he brings a wealth of experience that aligns with Powhatan’s mission and values.

Carson Roy holds an MA in Education Leadership from Columbia University Teachers College and a BA in History with an Education Minor from Saint Lawrence University. In his role at Potomac, he has successfully increased enrollment yield and managed a $7.1M financial aid budget. He also teaches Upper School History and is involved in various committees focused on curriculum, retention, and diversity.

Earlier in his career, he worked at Pomfret School as the Director of Admissions and Financial Aid, where he achieved record numbers in boarding student enrollment. He has also held positions at Ethical Culture Fieldston School and The Williston Northampton School, among others. Carson has presented at national conferences and holds memberships in several professional organizations related to enrollment management.

His references were effusive in their praise of Carson’s work, his ability to build a team, his attention to detail, and his maturity. His colleagues specifically referenced his ability to create a sense of belonging, his sound character and integrity, and his dedication to what is best for the kids.

Carson comes to Powhatan with his wife, Jillian, and two children, Campbell (10) and Grady (9). The whole family is excited to join the community. To help facilitate a huge welcome, the current Powhatan Head, Jay Briar, has initiated transition conversations with Carson and the family has been included in the distribution of the newsletter.

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, we would like to thank the Head of School Search Committee members, our consultants at ST Search, and all the members of the Powhatan community who have contributed significantly to the search process. We laud all who were involved for their commitment and dedication to the integrity of the search process.

We thank you for your support and ask you to join us in welcoming the Roy family to our community.

Dear Powhatan School Community,

I am extremely honored and humbled to join the Powhatan School community as the next Head of School. From the very beginning of this process, it was clear that Powhatan is a special place. The warmth, closeness, and authenticity were palpable from the moment our family stepped foot on campus, and we feel so proud to be joining such a vibrant and close-knit community.

We are grateful to the many people – Board and Search Committee members, administrators, teachers, students, parents, and other friends of the school – who so generously welcomed us during our visit. Our interactions with all of you only solidified what we had felt throughout the search process- that the people at Powhatan are really what sets it apart from other institutions.

I feel fortunate that I will be leading a school whose mission aligns so closely with my own educational philosophy– to ignite a lifelong passion for learning by fostering knowledge, creativity, and character in our students. I am committed to ensuring that the decisions and initiatives we pursue are grounded within the mission and pillars that are the bedrock of Powhatan’s educational philosophy. In addition, I look forward to collaborating and partnering with people in the community to implement Powhatan’s newly developed strategic plan and build upon a 75 year legacy of educational excellence.

I cannot wait to officially get started this July and look forward to spending time on campus during the upcoming months to get to know the community even better. On behalf of Jillian, Campbell, and Grady, we can’t wait to join you in 202 days!

Carson D. Roy
