Pre-K Makerspace Fun: “Not A Box”

Last week, Pre-Kindergarten students enjoyed a Design Challenge inspired by the picture book, “Not a Box”, written by Antoinette Portis. The main character in the story is a rabbit with a box. Each time the reader asks the rabbit what he is doing with his box, the rabbit replies, “It’s not a box!” Instead, the rabbit imagines that the box is a pirate ship or a mountain – the possibilities are endless!

Our Pre-Kindergarten students were invited to consider the question, “What might you create with a single box?” To begin, they explored a variety of boxes to spark ideas and then translated their thinking into detailed blueprint sketches. From there, they headed over to the Makerspace, where they brought their “Not-a-Box” creations to life.

In the Makerspace, our youngest learners engaged in hands-on exploration—experimenting with loose parts, thoughtfully selecting materials, testing their designs, and making revisions when their initial ideas required refinement. From giraffes to boats, their work beautifully illustrates that a simple box can become anything the imagination allows. We invite you to visit the Lindsey Library to view their “Not a Box” creations on display.
