J-Term Returns! (January 20–23)

We are excited to announce the return of Powhatan’s Upper School J-Term from January 20–23. After last year’s success, we have refined and expanded the program to offer students greater choice and engagement.
J-Term offers a dynamic shift in learning while maintaining the regular school schedule. During this four-day program, students participate in hands-on, interdisciplinary, and student-centered projects that emphasize exploration, collaboration, and curiosity.
This year’s program builds on what we learned from our first launch and offers more student choice across a wide range of experiences tailored to different interests and developmental levels. For example, sixth graders might create poems, spin stories, and discover their unique voice in Write On or take on an engineering challenge in Bridge Boss. Seventh graders may dive into global history through Crash Course to World War II or unleash their creativity in Create a World Beyond Our Own. Eighth graders will apply real-world skills in courses such as Meals on Wheels Madness, where students design and run a food truck business, or Where Do You Want to Go?, a project-based course focused on travel planning and budgeting.
Across all grade levels, students strengthen essential skills valued at Powhatan, including critical thinking, problem-solving, teamwork, creativity, and independence, while exploring new interests and learning alongside peers.
Our faculty has once again demonstrated tremendous creativity and care in designing engaging, purposeful J-Term experiences. We believe this program enhances Powhatan’s commitment to student-centered learning and sets a positive tone for the second half of the academic year.
Thank you to Carson Roy, Head of School, for championing innovative learning experiences and to our faculty for bringing J-Term to life. We appreciate the continued support of our parents and look forward to a great week of learning for our students.
~Mr. Robb, Head of Upper School
