J-Term Fun, Food and Ancient Worlds

J-Term offers a dynamic shift in learning while maintaining the regular school schedule. During this four-day program, students participate in hands-on, interdisciplinary, and student-centered projects that emphasize exploration, collaboration, and curiosity. This year’s program builds on what we learned from our first launch and offers more student choice across a wide range of experiences tailored to different interests and developmental levels. You will find a few of our fun J-Term activities below:
Samurai History
Students stepped back in time to Feudal Japan to discover the world of the Samurai. In this class, students learned how Samurai lived, trained, and influenced daily life, as well as what led to the end of their era. At the end of the week, they headed over to the Makerspace to bring history to life by designing and creating their own Samurai armor, inspired by real armor worn by Samurai warriors.
Food Truck Fun: Meals on Wheels Madness
Students teamed up in groups to create their own food truck businesses from the ground up. Throughout the week, they decided what food to sell, designed their trucks, analyzed costs, and developed marketing plans. To culminate the experience, students put their business skills to the test by selling their products and pitching their concepts to a panel of faculty judges—gaining firsthand insight into entrepreneurship, communication, and teamwork.
Who Wants to Eat Old Clothes?
Students explored and tasted a variety of foods from Spanish-speaking Latin America while learning about cultural traditions through cuisine. They prepared several common dishes, including Ropa Vieja—a famous shredded beef dish whose name literally translates to “old clothes.” The class blended hands-on cooking with cultural exploration, giving students a flavorful way to learn.
